Our Approach

The Integral Assessment™ Process

A Closer Look

JMJ's Integral Assessment process initiates the transformational journey. A state-of-the-art diagnostic, the Integral Assessment process provides an in-depth understanding of an organization's current operating condition. In the assessment phase, we peel back and examine the layers of an organization to identify areas of strength and limitation appropriate to the business challenge at hand.

Specifically, we:

  • Gain a deeper and richer view of current reality than a client could on their own,
  • Support the client to understand assessment findings in an optimally skillful way so that new possibilities and openings for action emerge,
  • Provide the opportunity to tailor the consulting engagement to each client's unique situation and goals, and
  • Generate a baseline performance level against which to measure progress.

Applying an Integral Perspective: An In-depth Overview

JMJ's approach is holistic, revealing the unique intricacies and characteristics of each client. Organizations are inherently complex, characterized by layers of nuance. The Integral Assessment process helps to highlight the levers that will lead to most effective change.

Our approach is distinctly simple and effective at capturing the complexity of an organization. Beginning with a Quadrant Model, as shown in the animated graphic below, we look at individuals and groups from both an interior and exterior perspective. This allows us to harness information from four distinct viewpoints: (Scroll over the graphic for details.)

  1. The interior view of a person,
  2. The exterior view of a person,
  3. The interior view of a group, and
  4. The exterior view of a group.

Developmental Levels

The JMJ Integral Assessment process also uses a four-level developmental scale to measure an organization's primary action orientation (way of knowing and acting).

Organizations can be assessed as:

  • Reacting: Each one for himself
  • Conforming: Following authority, rules and roles
  • Achieving: Systematically striving and driving to improve performance
  • Integral: Bringing together the I, we and all our systems

Those individuals and organizations able to move to and operate at the Integral Level are more flexible—adaptive to change—and better equipped to effectively thrive in the increasingly demanding, competitive workplace.

Performance Dimensions

Finally, the Integral Assessment process drills down into a number of specific client performance dimensions, such as:

  • Leadership
  • Management Systems
  • Learning Capacity
  • Trust
  • Identity
  • Values and Alignment
  • Culture

We assess capability in each of the Performance Dimensions chosen to gain a clear understanding of the organization's capacity to deliver on its purpose and fulfill strategic objectives. The Performance Dimension selection varies based upon consulting engagement type and objectives.

Bottom Line

Combining insights from the Quadrant Model, Development Levels and Performance Dimensions—the Integral Assessment process—JMJ and the client arrive at a robust and powerful set of perspectives from which to collaboratively design the appropriate consulting engagement. Revisiting one or more of these elements at appropriate intervals during the course of an engagement serves to measure developmental progress and provides sufficient detail to appropriately finetune the consulting plan, as needed.
