Leading South Korean shipbuilder renews its safety commitment with executive workshop.
JMJ’s long-standing partnership with South Korea’s leading shipbuilding company continues to grow following Hanwha Group’s acquisition of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in 2023. Now operating as Hanwha Ocean, the company is reaffirming its commitment to safety culture transformation by working closely with JMJ to embed Incident & Injury-Free™ (IIF™) leadership practices throughout its operations.
In May 2025, Hanwha Ocean hosted a Safety Leadership IIF Commitment Workshop™ with JMJ, bringing together key leaders to embed safety leadership across all levels of the organization. The workshop reflects Hanwha’s broader $1.3 billion investment over the next three years to strengthen safety performance and build a zero-incident workplace.
This ongoing collaboration builds on the successful Incident & Injury-Free safety approach launched in 2021. In partnership with JMJ, Hanwha Ocean initiated a safety culture transformation grounded in leadership commitment and proactive safety behaviors. The program began with a robust assessment, leadership workshops, and the appointment of 25 Incident and Injury-Free™ safety leaders in the production department.
By 2022, the IIF initiative had expanded to include subcontractors and the quality division, reinforcing a culture of care beyond Hanwha Ocean’s direct workforce. The impact of this work was captured in a video featuring employee voices and personal reflections on what safety leadership means in practice. JMJ later recognized Hanwha Ocean with the ‘Making the Impossible Possible’ award, celebrating the company’s dedication to achieving a zero-accident workplace.
Hanwha Ocean and JMJ’s ongoing partnership was recently featured in Chosun Biz, highlighting the importance of this partnership and JMJ’s continued role in supporting Hanwha Ocean’s strategic focus on operational safety.
