Formed in 1999, the mission of the National Academy of Construction (NAC) is to establish a body of recognized construction industry leaders and share their combined expertise to strengthen the industry and the well-being of the nation. Its elected members demonstrate extraordinary leadership, exceptional achievements, and lasting improvements to the construction industry over many years, many projects, and many parts of the industry.

As part of NAC’s “Get the Knack” podcast series on the theme of construction safety, NAC members Mike Goddu, Managing Director – Major Capital Projects at JMJ, and Sue Steele, CEO of Steele Associates, recently recorded two discussions on “safety culture”.

In part one, Mike and Sue draw on their own experiences working with the construction industry to consider:

  • How we define a safety culture
  • How to recognize a positive safety culture at your site/organization
  • The point when safety became personal for them
  • The role of leadership in embedding safety as a value

Part 2 of the podcast delves more deeply into definitions of leadership and the role that construction leaders play in implementing and sustaining a strong safety culture. The discussion includes:

  • How to generate and sustain a strong safety culture
  • The critical role of line managers in building a culture of safety
  • The importance of asking the right questions about your safety culture
